چکیده

We calculate the flux of ultra high energy photons from individual ordinary (i.e. non-superconducting) cosmic strings and compare the results with the sensitivity of current and proposed TeV and EeV telescopes. Our calculations give only upper limits for the gamma ray flux, since the source of the photons, jets from particle production at cusps, may be weakened by back reaction effects. For the usual cosmic distribution of strings, the predicted bursts from strings with the value of mass per unit length associated with galaxy formation or light strings may just be detectable. A diffuse gamma ray background from light strings may also be seen by the Fly’s ∗ NAS/NRC Research Associate 1 Eye detector at above 7× 1010 GeV.

High-redshift gamma-ray bursts: observational signatures of superconducting cosmic strings?

The high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), GRBs 080913 and 090423, challenge the conventional GRB progenitor models by their short durations, typical for short GRBs, and their high energy releases, typical for long GRBs. Meanwhile, the GRB rate inferred from high-redshift GRBs also remarkably exceeds the prediction of the collapsar model, with an ordinary star formation history. We show that al...

We give an upper estimate for the number of gamma ray bursts from ordinary (non-superconducting) cosmic strings expected to be observed at terrestrial detectors. Assuming that cusp annihilation is the mechanism responsible for the bursts we consider strings arising at a GUT phase transition and compare our estimate with the recent BATSE results. Further we give a lower limit for the effective a...

Observing signatures of Cosmic Rays using high-energy gamma-ray telescopes

Detecting gamma-rays from discrete astronomical objects offers the potential to directly study sites of cosmic particle acceleration. Alternatively, the pervasive diffuse gamma-ray emission component caused by interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas and radiation fields carries information about the spatial distribution of cosmic particle accelerators and reveals details about the cha...

An Interpretation of the Evidence for Tev Emission from Gamma-ray Burst 970417a

The Milagrito collaboration recently reported evidence for emission of very high energy gamma-rays in the TeV range from one of the BATSE GRBs, GRB 970417a. Here I discuss possible interpretations of this result. Taking into account the intergalactic absorption of TeV gamma-rays by the cosmic infrared background, I found that the detection rate (one per 54 GRBs observed by the Milagrito) and en...

Quantum-gravity phenomenology with gamma rays and UHE cosmic rays

In recent years several ideas for experimental searches of effects induced by quantum properties of space-time have been discussed. Some of these ideas concern the role in quantum spacetime of the ordinary Lorentz symmetry of classical flat spacetime. Deviations from ordinary (classical) Lorentz symmetry are now believed to be rather natural in non-commutative space-times, models based on Strin...
